A Beginning

Welcome to my blog! I’m Jim Doolittle, and I’m a Certified Crop Advisor with a degree in agronomy from the University of Illinois. I currently work in agronomy sales for Cooperative Plus and cover a territory that encompasses parts of southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois. Home is in the small town of Hebron, Illinois, where I live on the same road that I grew up on, just 20 miles west. Some of you might know me as @cornwuff on Twitter where I’ve kept up an eclectic stream of agriculture tidbits, pictures, and personal conversation since 2009.

I grew up in agriculture on a dairy and row crop farm in Antioch, Illinois. My parents still farm, and I remain somewhat involved in the operation, both as their agronomist and as an occasional weekend tractor driver. One of the benefits of moving back to this part of Illinois from my former job in Iowa was the chance to be closer to the home farm and my family. I’ve been mostly away from the farm for ten years, and it’s been great to be back close to it.

So that’s a little about me. What about this blog? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure, yet. I’ve kept an online journal in the past, so I’m no stranger to blogging, although I’ve not done it actively in a couple of years. I’m a dedicated Twitter user, but I often find myself wishing for more than 140 characters, so that’s where this blog is going to come in. For the moment, it’s going to be a longer form of my Twitter stream. Expect some agronomy-focused entries on corn and soybean production, which I’m going to try and keep at a level the non-farmer can understand. I have thoughts rattling around in my head about the collision of urban and rural issues, something that is of direct concern to me, as the farm I grew up on is slowly being surrounded by housing developments and strip malls. I dabble in photography and carry both an iPhone in my pocket, and a more serious camera in my truck, so you’ll see a fair amount of photoblogging, as well. I’ll season all of that with a smattering of non-agriculture related content. In time, I hope to find what mix of topics works best for me.

For the moment, I’m hosting this on the free service. I’m going to play around for a month, see if I like doing this, and can keep some content flowing. Don’t expect the blog to look the same; I’m going to play with the settings, themes, widgets, and whatever else there is to configure. I’ll probably even change the name. Eventually, the entire blog may pick up and move to a hosted domain name. We’ll see. Until then, enjoy watching me flail around.
